Tim Barnes Obituary


Timothy Walters Barnes, 72, of Amarillo passed away Sunday, July 21, 2019. 

Memorial services will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday, July 26, 2019 at First Baptist Church in Boise City, Oklahoma. The family will receive friends and loved ones for visitation from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Thursday, July 25, 2019 at Cox Funeral Home, Amarillo.

Tim was born in Ashland, Kansas, on November 8, 1946, the first child of Glen Malcolm Barnes and Blanche Walters Barnes. Tim was welcomed home by an older brother, Robert Stromatt, and later a younger brother, Craig Clay Barnes, made the family complete. Tim's early years were spent in Kansas and Texas. In 1958 the family moved to Keyes, Oklahoma, where Tim graduated from high school with the class of 1964. Tim graduated in 1968 with a B.A. in Economics from Oklahoma City University.

Upon college graduation, Tim went on active duty with the U. S. Army and graduated 2nd in his class from the Defense Language Institute in Washington, D.C. in 1970. He was a counter-intelligence agent serving in Korea and received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Army on December 12, 1971. Tim married his high school sweetheart, Janet McCoy, on September 15, 1967, in Oklahoma City, OK.

In 1972 they moved to Boise City, Oklahoma where Tim began a 40-year banking career. Here they also doubled their little family with the births of two sons, Brandon Andrew and Jason Taylor. Tim was a hands-on Dad and very involved in all the activities of his sons, including academic, sports and scouting. He served on the Boise City School Board for a number of years and was able to award his sons' diplomas at both junior high and high school graduation. Tim was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Boise City, Oklahoma, where he served on many committees and lived his Christian faith as a faithful, kind, and honest man. Tim retired in 2012 and enjoyed golfing, traveling and spending time with his family.
Tim was an ardent student of World War II history and especially enjoyed visiting Pearl Harbor in 2012 and being at Normandy for the 70th Anniversary of D- Day and visiting other European Theater sites in France, Belgium, Luxemborg and Germany in June, 2014.

Tim was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Robert. He is survived by his wife Janet, his children, Brandon and Christine Barnes of Keller, TX, Taylor and Jill Barnes and grandchildren, Glendon and Brooke, all of Edmond, OK, and by his brother Craig of Guymon, OK.
