Thane McCloy Obituary

Thane McCloy, 94, lifelong Hutchinson County farmer and rancher, passed away Sunday, March 10, 2019 at the Hansford Manor, Spearman, Texas.

McLeod Thane McCloy was born to Leslie (Braly) and M.W. “Cloud” McCloy on December 7, 1924 in Spearman.  Thane attended Pringle Grade School and Morse High School.  He briefly attended Texas Technological College in Lubbock before being drafted.  He served in the United States Army during the latter part of World War II and was stationed in the Philippines.  Following the end of the War, Thane returned home and to college.  Thane and Betty Sue Gillispie began their courtship, and married on June 11, 1950 at the Morse Baptist Church.  Faith, family and the farm served as the foundation of Thane McCloy.  Thane watched farming evolve from horse drawn threshers on dry land crops to GPS-driven tractors and center-pivot irrigation, and he loved every part of it.  As a cattleman and a farmer, he was blessed to be able to work hard at something he loved.  Thane was known as a faithful Christian gentleman, good neighbor and friend.  He had an ornery sense of humor and a sweet tooth, loving any pie and all ice cream.

Thane and Sue were active in the Pringle-Morse community, where they were active members at Morse Baptist Church.  Thane served on several agriculture boards and on the Pringle School Board.

Thane is survived by his bride of 69 years, Sue McCloy; their five children, Nancy and David Holland of Midland, Texas; Dr. Steve and Cindy McCloy of Miles, Texas; Rex and Susan McCloy of Pringle; Dianne and Martin Bucy of College Station, Texas; and Bonnie and Hunter Novak of Guymon, Oklahoma; sister-in-law, Nell Henderson of Morse; and longtime cherished family friends, Bill Statser (Karon) of Surprise, Arizona and Jack Crowl (Rosie) of Pringle.   He was “Papa” to his nineteen grandchildren and spouses, Marci (Trey) Corry, Risa (Jared) Meyer, Matt (Mary Elizabeth) Holland, Abby (Dr. Fadi) Saba, Jake (Lindsey) McCloy, Zach (Sarah) McCloy, Molly (Tim) Mata, Jordan, Hayden and Samuel McCloy, Mike (Jamie) McCloy, Craig (Sara) McCloy, Jenny (Clay) Finley, Laura (Daniel) Harris, John (Noel) McCloy, Rachel and Corrie McCloy, Ethan (Taylor) Novak and Griffin Novak, twenty-six great grandchildren and Uncle Thane to his many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Marjorie Trumball, and three brothers, Wilson McCloy,  Willard “Si” McCloy and Carson McCloy.

Memorial services will be Saturday morning, March 16th, 11:00 A.M. at Morse Baptist Church, with Pastor Gary Stevens, officiating.  Interment of cremains will be at Lieb Cemetery, Pringle, Texas.
