Mary Pugh Obituary

On Saturday, October 31, 2020, Mary Sue Pugh, loving mother of 3 children and 4 grandchildren, passed away at the age of 93. She was in her home in Superior, Colorado, with her two daughters by her side.

Mary was born on Dec. 11, 1926, to George Marion Stewart and Mattie Irene (Silver) Stewart near Sweetwater, Oklahoma. She was the 8th of nine children. When she was only 3, her mother passed away at the birth of the ninth child. Times were hard and money was scarce. The family made it through the Great Depression and then the Dust Bowl. Mary and her sisters loved to sing and would harmonize with any song they could learn. Mostly songs from church. It got them through many hard times and lots of dirty dishes. The love of God and her family were the most important things in Mary’s life. She saw 2 brothers serve in WWII and prayed for them to come home every day. She spent several years taking care of her father when his health failed him. He died in 1948, when she was only 19.

Mary met Charles in 1950 and they were married on April 6, 1951. They were blessed with 3 children Elaine, Debbie and Matt. Her biggest delight was raising her 3 children on the farm and teaching them to love the Lord. Seeing them grow up, being at their activities and sports, going to church, being a room mother, a PTA Officer, and a Bible teacher were all things she loved to do. Then as the grandkids came along, Mary loved spoiling them and babysitting when she could. She would spend hours rocking Tyler and letting him sleep on her shoulder. She and Charlie even went to England to be there for Lauren’s birth. Megan was only a few months old when Allan and Debbie moved back from England, so she was just the right age for hugs and cuddles. When MacKenzie came along, mom was happy to babysit every morning and she loved every minute.

Mary had a passion for cooking, gardening, growing her flowers, singing and making quilts. Her quick wit, her infectious smile and her kind compassionate spirit will long be remembered by all who knew her.

Mary was preceded in death by her father, George, her mother, Mattie, and her 5 brothers and 3 sisters. In 2002 her husband, Charles, and son, Matthew, passed away within 5 months of each other and it was very hard on her.

Mary is survived by her 2 daughters, Elaine Pugh of Westminster and Debbie Scharf and her husband Allan of Superior, Colorado. 4 Grandchildren: Tyler and his wife Alissa Scharf of Tulsa, Lauren Scharf of Colorado Springs, Megan Scharf of Arvada, CO and MacKenzie Pugh of Amarillo.
