Loraine Conner Obituary

Opal Loraine Shields Conner, born May 19, 1925 to Fred Lee and Ethel Loraine Parks Shields, departed this life on January 1, 2024. She grew up on the family farm northeast of Keyes with her siblings Lola, Faye, and Letha, attending school at Burg School until she started high school when she moved to the Keyes High School where she met the love of her life, Keith Conner, who stole her away from another beau her senior year. The two graduated in 1943 and married on February 8, 1947 in Clayton, New Mexico after the war ended and Keith returned home. Keith began farming with his dad and brother while Loraine stayed home to raise their children, James Keith “Butch” (Karen) Conner, Gerry Sue (Terry) Nichols, Georgia Kay (DeLynn) Turner, David Alan (Alice) Conner, and Rachel D’Ann Sides.

After her youngest child became established in school, Loraine went to work at the local drug store before moving on to her longtime career at Burrow Oil where she worked for over 30 years. Loraine was active in the Keyes Methodist Church, teaching Sunday School and helping with Vacation Bible School. After losing Keith to Leukemia in 1977, Loraine kept active serving as Treasurer for some of the organizations she served with including the Methodist Women, the Alumni, the Lady Lions Club, and the Rebecca’s and Oddfellows Lodge and she helped with the Cimarron County Fair for many years. She also enjoyed bowling and of course continued to enjoy her love of square dancing that began with those lessons she took with Keith before he became ill. She continued to dance travelling across the country until her legs simply wouldn’t let her dance anymore.

Loraine’s family grew over the years to include grandkids Shanon Conner, Sharon Gongora, Sherry Benson, Barbara Fox, Jeff Nichols, Uel Turner, D’Ann Hebberd, Jamie Hutchison, Keith Conner, Jeremy Conner, Jerome Conner, Kimberly Conner, Christina Brown, and Stephanie Puckett. She also had 27 Great Grandkids and 8 Great, Great Grandkids with 1 on the way. Loraine always shared a special bond with her nieces Avis, Betty, and Hazel who have provided a monumental amount of love and support over the years.

Loraine was preceded in death by her parents Fred and Ethel, siblings Fred Jr., Avis, Nadine, Lola, Faye, and Letha, her husband Keith, son Butch, son-in-law DeLynn, grandchild Darrian, and nephew Dale. When Loraine got to the pearly gates, she was greeted by her husband Keith asking “What took you so long?”
