Lester Miller Obituary

Lester C Miller, 95 year old of Guymon, Oklahoma passed away Friday March 6, 2020 at the Heritage Community Center.

Lester was born to Lewis and Reta Miller on June 7, 1924 in Enid, Oklahoma. The fourth child of eight, he grew up on a farm west of town. As a child, he attended a one room school house near the family farm. He graduated from Enid Schools with the class of 1942. After graduating from high school, Lester joined the Army and served in the Pacific during WW2. Once returning from the war, he attended Phillips University receiving his bachelor’s degree in Business.

Lester married Rose Marie (Peggy) Bishop on December 19, 1948 in Enid. They started their life together farming on the family farm, and then moved to a farm near Braman, Oklahoma where they raised their family. Lester served on the school board and was a member of the Braman United Methodist Church.

Lester and Peggy moved to Edmond, OK so they could both go back to school; getting master’s degrees from Central State University. Lester helped start up the Oklahoma City Community Jr. College; taught Management and Economics. While teaching there, he went nights and Saturday’s to get a PhD from the University of Oklahoma. During this time, he was also involved in constructing several office buildings in the Oklahoma City area. In the late 80’s, Lester and Peggy moved to Goodwell, OK where Lester taught at Oklahoma Panhandle State University until his retirement. He came out of retirement to serve as Interim Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs for a semester.

Lester enjoyed teaching at the university, working with wood, and making wooden toys at the OPSU wood shop. Some of his other enjoyments included making the gravy for the Methodist Men’s breakfast, being part of the Goodwell Lions Club, square dancing, playing dominos, and helping with the Boy Scouts in his younger years.

Lester was preceded in death by his wife Rose Marie (Peggy) in 2015, his son David Lester in 2017 and his daughter Kay Lynn in 1960. He is survived by his two sons Terrel Miller of Park City, UT and Lyle Miller of Mobile, AL, his daughter-in-law Rose Miller of Goodwell and granddaughter Rae Marie and husband Scott Neigebauer of Guymon, brother Glen Miller of North Richland Hills, TX, and sister Betty Krause of Houston, TX. Lester was a member of the Victory Memorial United Methodist Church in Guymon, OK.

Memorial services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Friday, March 13, 2020 at the Henson Novak Funeral Chapel in Guymon. Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Canyon Camp with the funeral home accepting donations.
