Kurt Schaefer Obituary

Kurt Friedrich Schaefer was born Nov. 26, 1935 in a small town close to Chicago. His sister Elizabeth was born about 1939. They had a good family life with his dad’s brothers often over on Sunday afternoon to play pinochle and snack. He attended high school in Elmhurst, IL graduating in 1954.

Because a school friend had relatives in the Oklahoma panhandle, he came with him to Beaver county and then to PAMC, taking biology and chemistry and graduating in 1958. Here he met and married Earlene Hendricks of Beaver. They had three children Anne (1957), Lisa (1958) and Eric (1960). He and Earlene both continued their schooling. He got a PhD in biology and came to teach at PAMC, Goodwell, OK in 1965.

At PAMC (OPSU), he enjoyed doing varied courses, especially his entomology as he identified Texas county insects. During most of this time Kurt had kept his body in very good shape with jogging, often doing several miles both morning and evening. Kurt and Earlene divorced. He later married Judith Schaefer and moved to Texhoma, OK. Retiring from OPSU in 1999, he then taught web design at local schools and did web pages for the town. He continued his walking exercise, often picking up roadside trash as he went and taking the recyclables to Dumas, TX.

Kurt’s health deteriorated in 2016 and he made frequent trips to Amarillo for cancer treatment. He seemed to recover from this but was often tired. He died very unexpectedly on Sunday April 17, 2022 at the age of 86.

His services will be 2:00 P.M at the Texhoma Church of Christ, April 25, 2022, with Ron Eggleston officiating.
