J.B. Harrington Jr.

August 30, 1930 ~ January 13, 2021 (age 90)

Obituary

JB Harrington, beloved husband of Ruth Harrington, passed peacefully on Wednesday, January 13, 2021 at his home in Farmington, NM.  He was 90.

Born August 30, 1930, in Weatherford, Texas, JB was the son of Joe Boyd and Ida (Galbreaith) Harrington. He spent most of his childhood in and around Weatherford, except for a short time spent in Fort Defiance, Arizona in the mid 1930s.  The family soon returned to Weatherford and JB graduated from Weatherford High School in 1946.

JB continued his studies and decided to become a preacher, graduating from Abilene Christian College in 1950.  He began his ministry full-time that same year with the Church of Christ in Texhoma, Oklahoma.  Then, in 1952, JB moved to Elkhart, Kansas, where he met and married the love of his life, Ruth, his wife of 66 years.

JB’s ministry continued for the next 63 years with Churches of Christ in Loveland, CO, Farmington, NM, the Navajo Mission at Hogback, NM, Big Spring, TX, Albany, TX, Los Alamos, NM and Payson, AZ.  He spent the last 15 years of his ministry in Farmington, NM at Eastside Church of Christ.

JB is survived by his wife, Ruth; sons Boyd (Kim) of Arlington, TX; Alan (Linda) of Rio Rancho, NM; Dale of Los Alamos, NM; daughters Lisa (Les) Brown of Colorado Springs, CO; and Elyn (Rob) Nollan currently in Hong Kong.  JB is also survived by his sister, Sue Robinson of Weatherford, TX, 14 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

JB’s purpose in life was sharing God’s love for us with everyone around him.   He will always be remembered for the care and encouragement he shared with everyone he knew and for the godly example he was to his family, friends, and community in everything he did.  In his last years, his great joy was sharing encouragement with his friends by email and on Facebook and keeping up with his grand/great-grandchildren online.

A memorial service will be held at Eastside Church of Christ on Saturday, January 16,2021, at 1:00 pm.  The service will be on Facebook livestream on (1) Northside Church of Christ Farmington | Facebook.  Burial will be in Elkhart, KS.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in JB’s name to Eastside Church of Christ in support of mission work on the Navajo reservation, where JB was a missionary; the work there remained dear to him all of his life.  Donations may be sent to Eastside Church of Christ, PO Box 276, Farmington, NM 87499.
