Gloria Vernon, 84-year-old longtime Guymon, Oklahoma resident passed away Thursday, August 10, 2023 at the Ranch House Nursing Facility in Garden City, Kansas.
Gloria Lee Smalley was born December 27, 1938 in Weatherford, Oklahoma to Glen and Crystal (Bradley) Smalley.
She attended high school in Weatherford, Oklahoma graduating with the class of 1956. After graduation she attended Southwestern Oklahoma State University graduating with her bachelor’s degree in special education. She went on to obtain her master’s degree at Frank Phillips College.
On August 27, 1961 Gloria was united in marriage to Bill Vernon in Weatherford, Oklahoma. She and Bill made their home in Weatherford, Oklahoma, Enid, Oklahoma, Liberal, Kansas and made their forever home in Guymon.
Gloria taught special education in the Guymon, Oklahoma school district for 20 years. She enjoyed the interaction with her students.
In her free time Gloria liked to fish, camp, sew, square dance and playing card games. What she treasured most was her time with family.
She is preceded in death by her parents and one sister Glenda Creach.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory her husband Bill of Garden City, three daughters: Kris Dixon of Ulysses, Kansas, Karri McDaniel of Texhoma, Oklahoma and Mandy Vernon of Texhoma, Oklahoma, three grandchildren: Karisa Ramos and husband Andrew of Garden City, Kansas Ciara Waugh and wife Dayelle of Manhattan, Kansas and Brianna Vavra of Tahlequah, Oklahoma, four Great-grandchildren: Jacob Vela, Ella Ramos, Rowan Ramos and Maverick Ramos.
Visitation will be held 3:00 p.m. till 5:00 p.m. Sunday, August 13, 2023 at Henson-Novak Funeral Home in Guymon.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 14, 2023 at Victory Memorial Methodist Church with Pastor David Player officiating. Interment will follow in Elmhurst Cemetery in Guymon.
Memorial contributions may be made to Panhandle Area Special Olympics and will be accepted by the funeral home at p.o. box 1306, Guymon, Oklahoma 73942.
