Bill Lewis

Billy L. Lewis of Optima, OK passed away on January 27, 2022, at the Heritage Community in Guymon, OK. Billy (Bill) was born at Liberal, KS on November 25, 1930. He was the son of Vernon and Ruth Handley Lewis. He attended Block school for 8 years in the North part of Texas County. After grade school he attended high school in Guymon graduating in 1949. After high school he served in the U. S. Army in Korea for 18 months. He served in an artillery battalion for 15 months.

After arriving home, he farmed and worked in the gas and oil field service. He loved to farm and loved the cattle business. On November 30, 1957, Bill married the Love of his Life, Elizabeth Gurwell. They lived on the Dulabahn place north of Guymon for 13 years, later moving to the Gurwell Homestead, which was Elizabeth’s grandparents. He later worked for Panhandle eastern Pipeline where he retired after 27 years.

On October 6, 1963, their only son, Mark Alan was born in Guymon. Bill was a member of First Baptist Church in Guymon for well over 60 Years. He dearly loved his church family, especially the children who truly loved him back. On August 25, 2014, his dear Liz passed away from cancer.

He is survived by son, Mark and wife Judy Lewis of Guymon, One beautiful and wonderful granddaughter Heather and husband Justin Rice of Oklahoma City along with his wonderful great grandsons. Brecken and Bennett Rice who is dearly loved. He is also survived by one sister, Betty Wilkerson of Turpin, Oklahoma and a sister-in-law, Aleta Jo Gurwell of Borger, Texas, a host of special nephews, nieces, and many special friends.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, six sisters: Neva Hoffman, Mildred Mahaley, Dorothy Moore, Arlene Harris, Margaret Burrows and infant sister along with one brother, Edward Lewis and brother-in-law, Kenneth Gurwell.

Visitation will be held from Sunday January 30th, 2022, from 2:00 P.M till 6:00 P.M at Henson Novak Funeral Home in Guymon.

Funeral Services will be held 2:00 P.M Monday January 31st, 2022, at The First Baptist Church of Guymon, Oklahoma. Interment will follow at Elmhurst Cemetery.

In Lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to the Oklahoma Baptist Home for Children or the Heritage Community.
