Herman H. Smith, Jr., 97, longtime Guymon resident, passed away Wednesday, March 29th, 2017 at the Dunaway Manor/ Heritage Community.

The son of Gladys (Guinn) and Herman Hudson Smith, Sr., he was born April 19, 1919 in Ponca City, Oklahoma.  He was united in marriage to Betty Jo Riggs on February 24, 1940.  A World War II Veteran, Herman served in the United States Navy.  Following the War, Betty Jo and Herman moved to Hobbs, New Mexico and in 1948, they made their home in Guymon.  Herman worked for Dorchester in Hooker for 18 years, then with the Oklahoma State Corporation Commission, retiring in 1984.  He was a devoted member of Victory Memorial United Methodist Church and the Guymon Masonic Lodge.  Betty Jo passed away in 2001.

He is survived by a son, Michael G. Smith and wife, Rebecca (Becky) of Oroville, California; Four grandchildren, Rustin Smith, Taren Matthews, Matthew Holman and Jeffrey Holman; four great grandchildren, Ethan Smith, Peyton Smith, Jewels Osborn and Hudson H. Matthews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, son, John Guinn Smith and a brother, Gordon Smith.

Herman will be laid to rest next to his beloved wife, Betty Jo, at Longwood Cemetery, Ponca City, Oklahoma with private family services.  Arrangements are entrusted to Henson-Novak Funeral Directors of Guymon, Oklahoma.  Friends may sign the online guest book and send condolences at www.hensonnovak.com.
