Dr. Ronald Duncan ("Bob") Vaughn

August 25, 1935 ~ October 24, 2017 (age 82) 82 Years Old

Dr. Ronald D. Vaughn, 82, longtime Guymon resident, passed away Tuesday evening, October 24, 2017 at Northwest Texas Hospital in Amarillo as a result of an automobile accident.  The second of four children, Ronald was born to Herrod Ray “Bud” Vaughn and Mattie Eugenia (Duncan) Vaughn in Tulia,Texas on August 25, 1935.

Affectionately known as “Bob,” he was named by his grandmother at birth—a nickname that would continue throughout his life.  In fact, his 1953 Dumas High School Diploma reads “Bob Vaughn.”  Also, he answered to “Doc,” “Ron,” “Dad,” and “Granddad.”

Ronald spent his younger years in the Texas Panhandle, living in Tulia, Sunray, and Cactus.  During his years in Cactus, he and many of his friends spent countless hours at the“Rec Hall” playing in the gym.  Beginning in junior high, the Cactus kids attended school in Dumas where many excelled.  In 1953, four of the five basketball starters were from Cactus and won second in State in Class 2A basketball.

Ronald proudly served this country in the U.S. Army from October 1954 to September 1957.  He was stationed at Ft. Bliss, Texas; Fort Ord, California; Ft Campbell, Kentucky; Munich, Germany; and Augsburg, Germany.  He served with the 11th Airborne Division, and was honorably discharged (Spec IV) to return to college at West Texas State College in Canyon, Texas.

In 1957, at West Texas State, he met Patsy Irene Cunningham while she was working as a biology lab assistant at the college.  As college sweethearts, Pat and Ronald were married at the Joseph Hill Chapel, there on the West Texas campus in 1959.  To this union were born Ronna Kay (Vaughn) Baird and Mark David Vaughn.  During Ronald’s undergraduate studies, he earned his Bachelor of Science degree, completed his pre-dental training, and was accepted into the University of Texas Dental Branch in Houston, Texas.

Ronald graduated from dental school in 1963.  During his years of dental study, the International College of Dentists honored him with the Outstanding Achievement Award.  Dr. Vaughn had dental practices in Houston, Stratford, Texas, and Guymon, Oklahoma, and practiced dentistry until he was 75 years of age.

Ronald dearly loved his grandchildren and children and shared many funny memories of the past.  He was a plain spoken man and very soft hearted.  He believed in hard work and no excuses.Regularly, he studied the Bible - book by book, chapter by chapter, and verse by verse.  He  enjoyed his vegetable garden and farming.

Ronald is survived by his wife of 58 years, Pat Vaughn; daughter, Ronna  and husband, Dr. Blake Baird of Perry, Oklahoma; son, Dr. Mark Vaughn and wife, Sandy of Paris, Texas; four grandchildren, Bryce Alden Baird, Brayden Vaughn Baird, Riley Chrystine Vaughn, and Hunter Ray Vaughn.  In addition, Ronald has one sister, Jeanette Vaughn Lee of Stillwater, Oklahoma.  He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

A Celebration of Ronald’s life will be held on Saturday, November 11th, 2:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 310 N.W.  7th Street, Guymon, Oklahoma.  Afterwards, family and friends will gather at the Vaughn Farm, one-half mile north of 24th and Sunset Lane.  Services are entrusted to Henson-Novak Funeral Directors of Guymon.  Friends may sign the online guest book and send condolences at www.hensonnovak.com
