Lena Hipp

Lena Hipp, 93, longtime Boise City hairdresser and business owner, passed away Wednesday afternoon, April 4, 2018 at her home.

Lena Gladys Newberry was born September 15, 1924 on the Newberry homestead, north of Lamport, in Baca County, Colorado to Ocie S. (Osteen) and Warren Elmer Newberry.   Lena graduated from Walsh High School in 1943. As part on the “Greatest Generation”, her living through the Dust Bowl, the Great Depression and World War II, Lena had to be strong and resilient. Lena taught in a one room school north of Hugoton, Kansas for a short time. She was united in marriage to Ralph L. Hipp on January 12, 1946. The Hipps moved to Boise City in 1948, where Ralph Hipp ran the Sinclair Gas Station and Distributorship and Lena was a hairdresser in her home. At the Charm Cove beauty shop, she befriended and made her clients beautiful for more than 40 years. Lena was still working some in her 90s. She also worked as a bookkeeper and was known for her sweet, yet strong personality, all in her tiny little 4’11’ stature.

Lena was artistic. She loved to paint, do ceramics and beautiful China painting. She was a devoted member of First Baptist Church, where she had played the piano and organ in the past years and enjoyed her Sunday school class.   

Lena was preceded in death by her young son, Ralph Lyndon Hipp, who passed away in 1949, her husband, Ralph Hipp, who passed away in 1997, three sisters and one brother.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law that she loved as her own daughter, Mickey and Delvenia Hipp of Boise City. The Hipp family is very thankful for special caretakers, who treated Lena like family and called her “Grandma”. These special women are Diana, Tacie, Susie and Lois.  Lena is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Sunday afternoon, 4:00-6:00 PM at First Baptist Church, 103 N Cimarron, Boise City.

Funeral services will be Monday afternoon, April 9th, 2:00 PM at First Baptist Church with Rev. Trevor Bulls, pastor, officiating.  Interment will follow in   Boise City Cemetery with arrangements entrusted to Henson-Novak Funeral Directors of Guymon.
