Spearman, Texas – Dwayne Mitchell, 79, longtime educator and farmer, passed away early Thursday, September 21, 2017 at Medical City Alliance Hospital, Fort Worth, Texas.

The son of Thelma (Sherrill) and James Leslie Mitchell, Dwayne was born near Texas County, Oklahoma on May 4, 1938.  Dwayne was graduated from Adams High School and later from Panhandle A&M College in Goodwell, Oklahoma.  He received his Masters Degree from Emporia State University in Emporia, Kansas.  He was united in marriage with Donnie Doshier on August 24, 1958 at the Bethel Baptist Church, Hardesty, Oklahoma.  Dwayne began his teaching career at Hugoton, Kansas where he taught English and was the Speech and Debate coach.  Dwayne and Donnie moved to Spearman in 1970.  They both taught at Spearman High School, where he was famous for his "Critical Anaysis" and served many years as the yearbook sponsor.  Dwayne and Donnie reared their girls, invested in the community and were active in their church in Spearman.  Dwayne was able to continue to farm at their family homesteads near Hardesty and later also near Adams.  He was a longtime member and deacon at First Baptist Church, served on the Southwestern Pioneer Windmill Association, and on the Spearman School Board.  He was an avid reader, fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and Oklahoma Sooner football team, and enjoyed time with his family. 

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Donnie Mitchell; his daughters, Paige Sultemeier and husband Chris of Rogers, Arkansas; and Shelley Baloglou and husband Chris of Amarillo, Texas; two sisters, Mignon Sullivan and husband Gale of Lewisville, Texas; and Evonne Roberson and husband Dee of Edmond, Oklahoma; two brothers, James Mitchell and wife Josephine of Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Auburn Mitchell and wife Sara of Austin, Texas; and a sister-in-law, Kathryn Mitchell of Turpin, Oklahoma.  He was beloved Gramps to his grandchildren Christin Dixson and husband James of Fort Worth, Texas, Daniel Sultemeier of Fort Worth, Texas, Caitlin Jinks and husband Thomas of Lubbock, Texas and Joseph Sultemeier of West Point, New York; one great-grandson Jaxson Dixson and four great-grandchildren added by marriage: Mia, Emily, Oliver, and Jacob Dixson; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Maurice Mitchell.

Visitation will be from 6:00 PM till 8:00 PM Sunday, September 24, 2017 at the First Baptist Church in Spearman.

Services will be held 2:00 PM Monday, September 25, 2017 at the First Baptist Church in Spearman, Texas with Jim Medley  officiating. Burial will follow in the Hansford Cemetery.
